DIY Denim Bucket Hat & Shorts Set From Old Jeans (Beginners Sewing)

Updated: May 28, 2020

If you have an old pair of jeans or come across a cheap pair at the thrift store then here's a fun way to transform them into a cute denim shorts and bucket hat matching set with some simple sewing!

Step 1: Gather Materials

Step 2: Mark & Cut Shorts

While wearing the jeans, use your pencil to mark a spot where you'd like the shorts to fall. Then use fabric scissors to cut horizontally across each pant leg at that marked spot, cutting slightly diagonal lines with the outsides being a bit higher.

Step 3: Trace Pattern & Cut Pieces

Place each pattern piece (top, crown and brim) onto the excess pant leg material. Trace them with a pencil and cut them out. Note that for the crown and brim, you'll need to line one edge up with a folded side of the denim. The pattern instructions explain in further detail, if needed.

Step 4: Sew & Notch Crown

Sew the edges of the crown together to connect the ends. Then notch the shorter side of the crown with your fabric scissors. This will allow the material to attach to the top of the hat more easily. This is the inside of the hat, so the notches will not be visible.

Step 5: Sew Top, Crown and Brim Together

Align the notched edges of the crown with the edges of the round top piece, then sew them together all the way around. After that, line the bottom of the crown up with the brim and sew all the way around to attach those pieces. Flip the hat inside out to the correct side.

Note: Many people use a double layer for the brim but I decided to use just one layer since the denim is already pretty thick.

All done!

Voila! You've transformed a pair of jeans into a cute, nostalgic denim set that's perfect for warm weather. Thanks for checking out this tutorial!
